What does self-esteem have to do with feeling younger than your age? Actually, quite a bit, as it turns out. Do you walk with your head held high, because you possess self-confidence, or do you walk around with your head down, feeling low and unsure of yourself?
Which do you think will make you more appealing? You know the say “whether you think you can, or can’t, you are right?” Well, it certainly applies to self-esteem.
Self-esteem is your judgment of your own worthiness. It is comprised of beliefs and emotions you have about yourself as a person. It affects all aspects of your life such as your ability to trust others, your relationships, confidence, and work. There are two kinds of self-esteem: positive and negative.
Positive self-esteem shows up in form of confidence, optimism, ability to learn from your mistakes and ability to solve problems that life throws your way. In other words, you have the positive “can-do” attitude.
Negative self-esteem usually results in feelings of inadequacy, unworthy of love, inability to trust others and fear of taking risks.
Self-esteem takes years to develop. Depending on how you were treated as a child and what kind of people you were surrounded by will all influence how you are going to perceive yourself as an adult. Beware though: too little self-regard can cause you to accept abusive situations and fall short of your own potential, not a good situation. On the other hand, too much of self-appreciation can give you annoying and unrealistic sense of entitlement and an inability to learn from your mistakes. Not a good situation. You want to strive for a right balance, of knowing who you really are, and making the best of any situation.
If you have good self-esteem, then great! Having low self-esteem can certainly be remedied. How? You may ask. Well, first off, start with positive affirmations. It’s all too easy to feel sorry for oneself. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Tell yourself, I can do it! And you know what happens? You are absolutely right!
Even if you have a good reason to have low self-esteem you can rise above it. If you stay stuck in bad past history, the only one that pays the price for it is you, not the person that caused it. Remember that. Positive, can-do attitude can do wonders in making you look, and feel younger. It’s worth your while to try and achieve that goal.
