Pixel skin rejuvenation, is the latest cosmetic procedure used to tighten and rejuvenate your skin. Up until 2011 only doctors could administer this procedure, but in a court ruling, it was decided that trained estheticians could also administer this non-invasive treatment. It is the highest level of treatment before cosmetic surgery.
What it does
Pixel is a laser that causes controlled damage to skin in order to encourage emergence of new, younger looking, smoother, tighter skin. It prompts the skin to produce more collagen to heal itself, and in the process, remove wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, acne, rosacea and other skin conditions. Do not use the following products/procedures prior to treatment:
Botox and dermal filler 14 days prior
Hair removal products, waxing and electrolysis 7 days prior
Over-the-counter and prescription Retinol/Retinoid products; Alpha Hydroxy and Beta Hydroxy products; exfoliation products 3-5 days prior
When you arrive for your appointment, your esthetician will ask some basic questions such as whether or not you are on medications or hormone therapy, the last time you had botox or dermal fillers. Then she will assess your skin group, which ranges from fair to dark. So proper laser intensity will be applied to your skin.
Then numbing cream is applied to your face to minimize discomfort
Protective goggles are put on your eyes to protect them
The esthetician will test a small area to see how you feel. The sensation of laser is that of maybe a mosquito bite. That of itself is nothing unbearable. You are given a small hose to hold, that blows cold air, that you apply to cool your face. As the procedure goes on, you will notice a heating sensation, so that cool air is a great relief, and very soothing. I personally think that heat is more noticeable than the laser going over your skin. The process takes about 30 minutes.
Now that the treatment itself is finished, your skin is cleansed again, and cold compresses applied for a couple of minutes, to cool and soothe it. The next step is application of special post-treatment cream, and you are given instructions on how, when, and how long to follow the steps to aid in healing. Those directions should be very strictly adhered to, in order to protect your skin from getting infected.
Daily Maintenance Procedures
For the next two weeks following the pixel procedure, it is very important to perform the following steps twice daily, in the morning and at bedtime using products in your post-treatment kit:
Cleanse your face with special facial wash included in your post treatment kit
Apply facial mask, and leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm (not hot) water
Apply post-treatment cream, and during the day wear SPF cream (in your kit)
Apply special hydrating facial cream (purchase in your local drugstore)
Just to make sure your face doesn’t develop an infection, use clean towel daily and be very diligent in keeping your face clean, especially during the first two weeks post-treatment.
A word of caution: While Pixel laser is non-invasive, it wounds your skin under dermis, so it is possible to get some side effects such as: pain, infection, bruising, swelling, redness etc.
While dead layers of skin are flaking off, you are going to have noticeably dry skin, it will almost feel like you have a layer of sand paper on your face instead of skin, but once the flaking is done, you will notice your brand new skin emerging. The results take a while to build up, so be patient. You don’t replace years of depleting collagen in a matter of hours. It usually takes 2 or 3 treatments for best results, and then yearly follow ups.
